Which building department?
A building permit follows the city limit, not the ZIP code. Consolidated Jacksonville uses the Building Inspection Division at (904) 255-8500. Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach each have their own. Clay County and St. Johns County do too.
Consolidated Jacksonville
Online applications are required. An inspection request is (904) 255-8500, option 4, weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. A zoning question is a different line, (904) 255-8300.
Beach cities
Atlantic Beach asks for one business day on a voicemail or an email. Neptune Beach inspection requests are (904) 270-2430, and the city says to call before 4 p.m. to be scheduled the next day. A Jacksonville Beach right-of-way permit is public works, (904) 247-6219, at 1460-A Shetter Avenue.
Clay County
The county also lists (904) 269-6307. Plan examiners are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A property inside Orange Park or Green Cove Springs should be checked on that city’s page before you use the county number.
St. Johns County
Contractor licensing is a separate line, (904) 827-6820. A property in the city of St. Augustine or in St. Augustine Beach may be permitted by that city.
Check the town before the county
Orange Park, Green Cove Springs, St. Augustine, and St. Augustine Beach may permit their own property. Baldwin is its own town. This handbook does not have those building departments. Read that city’s page before using the county number or the Jacksonville number above.
